Low voltage recess cans - are they reliable on the long run?
I am remodeling my house and would like to put 3" cans. Since sheet rock is not there, I am going with new construction material.
For my kitchen bar top, I am planning to put 3 3" cans with dimmer. However, since Home Depot does not carry new construction 3" cans, I had to go to specialty store. They only have low-voltage cans.
I spoke with few friends and they told me that those don't last long (2-3 years), and because transformer is part of the can, once light is broken, I need to open sheet rock and replace the whole can.
Is this really so? How reliable are low voltage cans?
I agree completely with mark-ashcroft@sbcglobal's comment above. If you put a 500va (500w) low-voltage transformer in an accessible location, you don't even need a licensed electrician to run low-voltage wiring and fixtures around your house. If you have a pantry, you could mount the transformer on the wall near the ceiling in the pantry so it's hidden from view. Low voltage lights like MR16's have excellent color rendering and good light output for such a small bulb. They may not last as long, but you can also dim them to increase the life of the bulb. Also, with a remotely located transformer, the cans should be much shallower.
