stainless steel appliances with little ones at home...?
we're looking at new kitchen appliances if we move into a house this summer. do stainless steel appliances dent or scratch easily? how about fingerprints? for a home with two little ones, is it better to get s/s or maybe white/beige or black? any input from moms is welcome! i understand s/s is a better investment for resale value, but we plan on staying in the house for 7 years if it goes thru. thanks!

Stainless steel looks really classy in a kitchen, but it's a lot of work to keep up with little kids. I have a 2 1/2 year old boy and then another who isn't walking yet, but my SS fridge is always a mess on the bottom half. Finger prints, smudges of other things, etc - and he isn't allowed to go in the fridge himself. Also, you can't just wipe it off, or it will steak (like a window). Very high maintenance. You have to wipe it, and dry it, and to have it look really good, I always need to use a special cleaner. In addition to the SS, I have a black dishwasher, which is much easier to keep clean (it doesn't smudge/smear, I can just wipe it off and go). Denting easily? I haven't experienced that (yet) but my fridge is secluded in the kitchen so it's not like toys are being crashed into it regularly. But I do find that it can get marked up. We have a toaster oven on top and the handle of the oven (drop down door) has scratched/marked the stainless steel a bit. Another thing to consider is that stainless steel is not magnetic, so if you have anything like Fridge Phonics by Leap Frog, or you want to hang kids' papers on the front of your fridge, it won't work if you choose stainless steel. Personally, I'd choose black (at least for a fridge and dishwasher) and use the money you save by not paying for ss to upgrade to a higher end brand or model. Or you can always get the 'stainless look' appliances - then you would get the look of stainless without the high maintenance.
